Constitutionalism
Adherence to or government according to constitutional principles.
Text from the First Amendment
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Ron Paul on the First Amendment
“The establishment clause of the First Amendment was simply intended to forbid the creation of an official state church like the Church of England, not to drive religion out of public life.”
What does that mean?
The First Amendment prohibits acts that would influence people to believe something involuntary, for example I can teach to about Christianity but if I told you that you must attend church on Sundays and pray every night that is now breaching the Amendment. What Ron Paul is suggesting is that the founding fathers embraced religion, which is true. Some people believe they were Atheists but that is quite untrue, Jefferson rejected some denominations of Christianity but classified himself as a Christian and a believer in the God of the Bible. On the topic of religion George Washington said
“It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.”
That to me, does not sound like something an Atheist would say. But back to the point, does Ron Paul embrace constitutionalism? Yes he does. Do his views on Church and State violate the Constitution? No, they do not.
